Additional info

This tour can be combined with a visit to Herculaneum, Pompeii or Naples. Upon request, it can be organized also from Sorrento or Salerno.

The walk to the top of the crater is quite strenuous and it takes about 30 minutes on an irregular path mostly made of ashes; for those not willing to do it, there is a café by the car parking.

If requested you can book our optional private guide from the beginning of the tour, otherwise once on the top, there will be geologists giving a short introduction also in English; this commentary takes place in a shared group every half hour and it is included in the entrance fee.

Itinerary

You will be riding on the slopes of the Volcano Vesuvius for  about 30 minutes. Marvel at the views of the bay of Naples: the northern islands of Ischia and Procida;  the Cape Misenum, a peninsula which once hosted the Roman fleet, famous for being the point of observation for the big eruption of Pompeii in 79 AD by the admiral of the Roman fleet Pliny the Elder; also visible in a distance is the beautiful island of Capri.

After a quick drive on the highway, we will exit at Torre del Greco and start driving uphill on the side of the volcano. On the way up there are chances to observe some volcanic rocks and the flora that colonizes the lava stone.

At the mid-height we are driving next to the lava slide dating back to the 1944 eruption: a black solid flow covered by some whitish lichens endemic to the Vesuvius: the Stereocaulum Vesuvianum. Further up, we will see the building of the most ancient Volcanological Observatory of the World, dating back to 1845 during the Kingdom of the Bourbons of Naples.

Once reached the parking area, at 1000 mt. (3280 ft.), we can purchase tickets and start the walk up to the top. The climbing takes about 30 minutes. On the very top, you are allowed to walk around half of the rim of the crater of Mt Vesuvius.

Please be aware that the admission fee includes a brief commentary given by the local guides on a small shared tour.

Looking down into the crater you can see the “Gran Cono”, some geysers, and the different volcanic deposits.

Take the same path to go back to your driver who will be waiting for you in the parking area.

Your Private Tour to Mount Vesuvius will end at the same place it started unless differently requested.
