Discovering the Phlegraean Fields: between Archaeology and culinary traditions

Phlegraean Fields - Malaze 5

From 2nd to 19th of September, in the Phlegraean Fields do not miss the XII edition of “MALAZE'” a food and archaeological event that takes place every September, in the towns of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Monte di Procida, Quarto, Procida and Naples, to promote the hidden archaeological and environmental heritage of Campania.

Over the years Malazè has indeed combined the protection and the promotion of the cultural heritage, with food, tradition, history, new technologies, design and local business: through the organization of cultural events and the sponsorship of cultural products, the project aims to unveil ancient local traditions and practices. Music, architecture, food, and customs differ indeed from place to place within Italy and within Campania as well; the several tourist and cultural proposals together with a focused regional tourism promotion will contribute to unearth the beauties of the Phlegraean Fields and raise awareness about its historical and environmental heritage.

Even the event name comes from the local word “Malazè”: it was the “warehouse” built on the ground floor for fishing tools and houses that in the past overlooked the port in the town of Pozzuoli and was used as storage for the boats.

The food and tourist initiatives will take place in different areas of Campania: the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic area that includes an active volcano “The Solfatara”, the Averno Lake, the town of Pozzuoli with its Roman Amphitheatre and several ruins, the promontory of the Monte di Procida, the town of Baia with its archaeological ruins; the volcanic islands of Procida and Vivara and the city of Naples.
