TRANSPORTThe tour is available as a Private Shore Excursion from the Port of Naples or Sorrento or Salerno. Upon request we can organize a one day trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum from Rome – in this case  we recommend to choose only two out of three sites

Practical info

You will be met by your tour guide Naples Train Station where you will catch the Circumvesuviana train, a ride to Herculaneum is available every 30 minutes and it takes about 20 minutes. From the train station in Herculaneum there is a 15 minutes walk down-hill to the archaeological site. On the way back upon request we can hire a taxi at additional cost.

The length of the tour is approximately 5 hours but it may vary according to the timetable of the public transports system. At any case we guarantee that the visit of the archaeological area will last 2 hours.

Flow of the day

Before arrival at Herculaneum by train we will be riding on the southern slope of the Mount Vesuvius with more picture opportunities.
The first approach is absolutely spectacular: beneath you  the ancient town laying at the bottom of an archaeological hole about 60 feet deep, in front of you the huge skyline of Mt Vesuvius, behind you the clear light blue of the Bay of Naples and its islands. Great spot for pictures!
From the top you can see at one glance all the excavated area, corresponding probably to one quarter of the entire ancient Herculaneum.
Also visible from the very top is the ancient Marina, where a 300 human skeletons were found together with a boat and a few fishing tools.
Crossing a modern bridge, we will discover the garden of the “House of the Albergo”, where quince apple trees were replanted following the evidence of carbonized roots of these ancient fruit tree.
Our next stop is the Council Hall of the Augustales, where beautifully preserved frescoes depicting Hercules were painted.
We shall not miss the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, to admire the wonderful mosaics decorating the outdoor ‘biclinium’ (dining room); it was probably the house of a merchant: directly connected to it there is a food store with its counter, containers for food and amphorae for wine. Here the carbonised wooden shelves are still hanging on the walls!
We will discover the Bath House (an ancient Spa), still covered with mosaics. It will introduce you to the world or Roman daily care and social life : a  gym, a changing room, a tepid room, a hot room and at last a cold water tub.
Nearby Grande Palestra – a large outdoor Gym – consists of a glorious public sporting place. It still lays buried for about 3 quarters, but we can move into the cross shaped pool to feel like being an ancient archaeologist moving under the volcanic couch.
According to availability we will also visit the House of the Tramezzo Carbonizzato – where an original and nearly intact door still gives access to the main living room.

Practical info about the walking tour in Herculaneum

Herculaneum is not as big as Pompeii, in a 2 hour visit we are able to see most of the ancient town and certainly all the highlights. Anyway each walking tour will be adjusted on the desires and walking attitude of the participants. Also be aware that this private guided walking tour has to adapt to the availability of different areas which changes daily and cannot be predetermined.
After the visit at Herculaneum you can stop for a few minutes at the book shop or for a drink.
On the way back from the site to the station if you do not feel like walking you can always use an optional taxi for a short ride.

We chose Leisure Italy’s Herculaneum Day Trip by Train since we dislike traffic congestion in historic cities and try to avoid using private automobiles. Our Leisure Italy guide, Natasha, was waiting for us (well before the appointed time) as we walked out at the Naples cruise port building. It was interesting to travel on the Naples Metro to the Garibaldi station and we were grateful that we had Natasha at our side to buy our tickets and guide us to the right platform for the comfortable train ride to Ecolano.

Natasha provided a wealth of information as she guided us through the ruins of Herculaneum and we gained a good understanding of the buried Roman town. She is very knowledgeable and pointed out many interesting features that we would have missed if we had been on our own.

Our return trip to Naples was complicated when the train we were on stopped at a suburban station and was unable to go any further (no explanation given). Once again we were glad to have an experienced local guide as Natasha led us to a nearby bus stop and took us by an alternative route back to the cruise ship.

This delay meant that the tour was closer to 5 hours instead of 4 but Natasha was calm, professional and considerate of our comfort. It was a pleasure to meet her!
