Itinerary
Your experience begins with a scenic 30-minute drive along the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples. From here you can admire the islands of Ischia and Procida, Cape Miseno—once home to the Roman naval fleet and the vantage point from which Pliny the Elder observed the eruption of 79 AD—and the distant island of Capri
After a brief stretch on the highway, the ascent begins from Torre del Greco. As you drive up the volcano, you’ll have the chance to observe volcanic rock formations and the tenacious plant life that grows on the lava stone.
Midway up, you will pass the impressive black lava flow from the 1944 eruption, now blanketed with pale lichens unique to Vesuvius: Stereocaulum vesuvianum. A little further stands the world’s oldest Volcanological Observatory, founded in 1845 during the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples.
Upon reaching the parking area at 1,000 meters (3,280 ft), your tickets will be purchased and the 30-minute hike to the summit will begin. At the top, you can walk along half of the crater rim, with the admission fee including a short shared presentation from the local guides.
Looking into the crater, you’ll see the “Gran Cono,” fumaroles, and layers of volcanic deposits—an awe-inspiring reminder of the mountain’s powerful history.
After descending the same path, your private driver will be waiting for you at the parking area.
Your Private Tour to Mount Vesuvius will end at the same location where it began, unless otherwise requested.
