Heroes: Florence Pays Homage To David Bowie

Heroes Florence David Bowie

David Bowie the singer, the poet, the performer, the icon. The Thin White Duke has been undoubtedly one of the most representative artists of the XX century and after, since his music and songs have influenced many a generation. To quote one of his most famous lines he is truly a hero.

This very word is the name of the brand new exhibition, Heroes, that the Japanese master of photography, Masayoshi Sukita, has dedicated to his long gone friend David Bowie. A collection of more than 60 pictures that will be displayed in the fabulous setting of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the XV century astonishing house of Medici family in Florence thanks to the collaboration between the Tuscan city and ONO Arte Contemporanea art gallery. These unique pictures are a very valuable treasure since they stand for the sincere friendship between Bowie and Sukita and include not only the iconic shots that were chosen for the Heroes album, but include also memories from Bowie’s everyday life.

The friendship between Bowie and Sukita began in the early seventies and lasted until the death of the artist in 2016. Why was their relationship so special? As Sukita herself declared following their first encounter in London “I was mesmerised by Bowie’s concert poster, portrayed with his leg up high. Seeing David Bowie on stage opened up my eyes to his creative genius. Bowie was different to the other rock and rollers, he had something special that I knew I had to photograph”.

The exhibit will be opened to the public until 28th June 2019 and it is a truly unique experience in its genre, since it melts together the ancient with the new, the history of one of the most famous Italian families during the Renaissance with one of the most famous and controversial artists in the history of rock music.

During the three months of the exhibition, there will be many events in the style of Bowie. The company Le Nozze di Figaro will coordinate a set of acoustic concerts of musicians in the courtyard of the palace and the fans of Bowie will be able to find at the bookshop a rich choice of books and merchandising dedicated to this incredible artist.
