Night Walk in Pompeii, Oplontis and Stabiae

Night Walk

NIGHT WALK IN POMPEII, OPLONTIS AND STABIAE

A night with history or better say in the light of history. This could be the motto of the event promoted by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities that will take place from Friday 27th until 28th September along the routes of the Vesuvian archaeological sites: Pompeii, the Villa of Poppaea at Oplontis, the Antiquarium of Boscoreale and, for the first time, the Villa S. Marco at Stabiae will be illuminated on Friday and Saturday evenings for an evocative night walk.

In Pompeii the night walk will begin from Porta Marina and will lead visitors through some of the most relevant and astonishing buildings of the ancient Roman city in a suggestive mixture of suffused lights and sounds such as the shouts of the artisans from the workshops along Via Marina, the chatters of the matronae in the House of Triptolemus  or the sacred music in honour of Supreme Jupiter at the Capitolium. The path will be concluded with a visit to the Antiquarium and the findings displayed in the current exhibitions. In September the itinerary will expand with musical performances on the terrace of the Antiquarium.

About Oplontis the visit will cover the Villa of Poppaea, a precious example of a villa that is thought to belong to Poppaea Sabina, wife of the Emperor Nero, and the Antiquarium of Boscoreale, which represents a window to the life in the Vesuvian countryside during the Roman Age.

In Villa S. Marco at Stabiae there will be four night walks with free admission when visitors will have the chance to admire this unique example of Roman villa dated back to 1st centuty BC – 1st century AD in the archaeological area of Stabiae. The itinerary will end with a performance held by the actor Luigi Vernieri that will recount the last days of Pliny the Elder, died at Stabiae as a victim of the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, through a suggestive reading of a letter of Pliny the Younger to Tacitus.

Access to the night walk visits will not require a booking.
